Anthony Brownbill Paintings and Works of Paper at William Holman Gallery

Paintings and Works on Paper
February 7 – March 3, 2013

NEW YORK, January 24, 2013 - William Holman Gallery is pleased to announce the first solo exhibition of Anthony Brownbill at the gallery from February 7 to March 3, 2013. A skilled draftsman, and teacher of drawing, Anthony Brownbill captures the immediacy of his surroundings with an intensity that transports the observer into active participation in his scenes. Whether from the dizzying heights of rooftops or the warmth of a studio interior, the work speaks to discipline and an exacting touch that is visually figurative, palpable even, but applied with an abstraction of stroke and design. In his interior scenes, Anthony Brownbill has mastered painting the air under tables and the light behind plants, while in his larger painted cityscapes, layers of line and shape overlap to portray perspective and abstraction within architectural spaces. The bleeding of vibrant colors within his watercolor landscapes echoes the gestural lyricism of Kandinsky. While Brownbill’s scenes are contemporary, his style harkens back to old master techniques, notably through the use of pen and brown sepia tones.
A native of St. Kitts, Anthony Brownbill started painting on the island of St. Maarten in 1987. He moved to New York City in 1994, where he studied at the New York Studio School. Over the next four years, he immersed himself in the art of looking. Now a resident of Far Rockaway, Brownbill’s surroundings serve as inspiration for much of his work. Fortunately none of his work was destroyed during Superstorm Sandy.
A man of deep values and great emotive character, we are delighted to celebrate this expansive solo show of Anthony Brownbill’s work with a reception on Thursday February 7, 2013 from 6 – 8 p.m.
